My daughter and I have been using the Responses to Literature program for about three years. When she began she was a reluctant writer because she has a learning disability which makes it difficult for her to remember how to form letters and how to spell. At the beginning, if she wrote three sentences together we were happy.
Now, after writing in response to what she reads she is able to write out very complete and thoughtful answers. She is also able to write a well thought out five paragraph essay. The manual effort of writing is no longer an issue. I think the engaging nature of what she is reading takes her mind off the effort of writing.
All Ways Learning has provided me with valuable guidance. They put an emphasis on high quality literature as the basis of their program, and these books are both interesting and thought provoking.
I was getting nowhere teaching my daughter how to write when I was using workbook or textbook prompts. Within six months of beginning to use Responses to Literature I could see significant changes in her ability and interest in putting sentences together. Over the three years the transformation has really been amazing.

It is with tears in my eyes I write. Last year, I was amazed at my older daughter's improvement with language arts, and there is no questions my son's understanding and ability to put his thoughts on paper, coherently, have increased.
It is however, about my younger daughter I wish to truly commend you and your process. The progres she has made this year is in so many areas, and the greatest has been attitude. For it is not just the quality of the work she did but her desire and determination to make it her very best which truly brims my eyes.
You've made me a believer - again! I cannot thank you enough foryour ministry and service to our children. "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not." Gal 6:9
May God continue to bless your efforts. L.W. Woodstock, VA |
